Be Heart Healthy

Small tips that can lead to big changes for your heart and your health.

*Being physically active every day is fun and can improve the function of your heart. Plan and schedule opportunities for active play.

•If your family enjoys video games, select versions that require moving the body’s large muscle groups while playing.

•Take a Snooze! Lack of sleep has been associated with elevated cholesterol and blood pressure.  Adults need at least seven, but no more than nine hours, children need 10-12 hours of sleep.  Develop bedtime routines for the whole family to assist with falling asleep faster and staying asleep.

•Makeover your family’s favorite recipes by reducing the amount of salt and saturated fat and substituting a lower fat food without sacrificing taste. For example, use low-fat yogurt instead of sour cream and skip the seasoning packet and use pepper and olive oil instead.

•Read food labels to learn more about what is in the package, select foods that have less than 1,000 mg of sodium per serving.

• According to the CDC, lowering or maintaining normal blood pressure can greatly reduce your risk for heart disease and stroke.

• Spending time together as a family is a great way to reduce stress.

Youth & Family Classes, Programs and Sports

Whether it’s gaining the confidence that comes from learning to dribble a ball or building the positive relationships that lead to good sportsmanship and teamwork, participating in sports at the Y is about building the whole child, from the inside out.

Camps: School Holiday and Summer

Overnight, day or specialty camps at the Y share one thing: they’re about discovery. Kids have the opportunity to explore nature, find new talents and try new activities in our sports, academic, excursion and child care day camps. 

Adult Classes, Programs and Sports

Whether you’re new to the community or simply want to pursue a new hobby, the Y brings together people who love to learn. Whether you want to take parenting classes, join a rowing club, or practice karate — you’ll learn with others who share your interests.

Certifications and Other Training

The Y brings people together who want to learn. Whether you want to be a lifeguard or just learn how to save a life, you’ll come together with others from your community who share your interests.

Special Events

Sharing special times with family, friends and the community is what the Y is about. Whether it's taking part in our Healthy Kids Day, joining us for our Halloween Bash or visiting us at Turtle Bay's Walk This Way – you'll meet new people and build special memories.

First Aid Classes

The Y is a great place to get certified in First Aid.  Next class is February 25, 5 - 9 pm.
