History of Pickleball

Pickleball was created unintentionally by two friends looking for something to do with their families one Saturday afternoon.  After playing golf, Joel Pritchard and Bill Bell returned to Pritchard’s home on Bainbridge Island to find their families sitting around bored.  The property had an old badminton court so Pritchard and Bell looked for some badminton equipment but could not find a full set of rackets. They improvised and started playing with ping-pong paddles and a perforated plastic ball.

Youth & Family Classes, Programs and Sports

Whether it’s gaining the confidence that comes from learning to dribble a ball or building the positive relationships that lead to good sportsmanship and teamwork, participating in sports at the Y is about building the whole child, from the inside out.

Camps: School Holiday and Summer

Overnight, day or specialty camps at the Y share one thing: they’re about discovery. Kids have the opportunity to explore nature, find new talents and try new activities in our sports, academic, excursion and child care day camps.

Adult Classes, Programs and Sports

Whether you’re new to the community or simply want to pursue a new hobby, the Y brings together people who love to learn. Whether you want to take parenting classes, join a rowing club, or practice karate — you’ll learn with others who share your interests.

Certifications and Other Training

The Y brings people together who want to learn. Whether you want to be a lifeguard or just learn how to save a life, you’ll come together with others from your community who share your interests.

Special Events
